Mental Health Support Services

The EMPHN commissioned the mental health support services. The services work within a ‘stepped care’ approach that recognises that people have different health care needs at different times. The stepped care approach is about providing the right service at the right time, with the level of care matched to the individual’s needs. EMPHN’s mental health stepped care services consider the whole person, addressing (for example) physical health, education and employment, alcohol and other drug treatment, family and social connections, and suicide prevention. Collaborative care is a focus, with the individual’s care team and services working together in a coordinated way. Support is provided through online, eHealth technology and apps; self-help resources; face-to-face individual or group sessions; care coordination, and medication and psychiatric review. Consumers are assisted to access additional support from specialist practitioners or from mental health services offered by Local Hospital Networks (e.g., area mental health services), as their needs change or increase. EMPHN’s mental health stepped care services are delivered by peer workers, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, and mental health nurses, among others.
